About the Colorado Permit Test

The Colorado permit driving test is made up of 25 total questions. Of those 25 questions, individuals will need to answer 20 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 80%.

Individuals must be at least 15 years of age to take the Colorado permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Colorado permit test:

  1. Apply for your permit in person
  2. Bring proper documentation
  3. Bring proof of completed driver education
  4. Have parent or guardian present to sign
  5. Take and pass written knowledge test
  6. Get picture and fingerprints taken
  7. Pay the fee ($17)
  8. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Colorado DMV, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Colorado, you will need to complete 30 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 50 hours of supervised driving hours.

There are a total of 25 questions on the Colorado permit test.

For the CO written test, you must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 20 questions.

You may apply for a permit in Colorado when you are at least 15 years old.

You can get your license in Colorado when you have waited at least 12 months  after you received your permit.

You can get your license in Colorado when you have had the following supervised driving time: 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night.

In Colorado you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: midnight – 5 a.m.

Passenger Restrictions: first 6 months—no passengers; second 6 months—no more than one passenger secondary enforcement.

In Colorado, the minimum permit age varies. Fifteen year-olds who are enrolled in driver education may apply for an instruction permit. Their supervising driver must be a parent, stepparent, grandparent, guardian, or driving instructor.

At age 15, 6 months, driver education is no longer required, but applicants for this permit must have completed a four hour driver awareness program. At 16, young drivers may apply for a permit that allows driving while supervised by a licensed driver age 21 or older.
