About the Kentucky Permit Test

The Kentucky permit driving test is made up of 40 total questions. Of those 40 questions, individuals will need to answer 32 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 80%.

Individuals must be at least 16 years of age to take the Kentucky permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Kentucky permit test:

  1. Apply for your permit in person
  2. Provide proper documentation
  3. Have parent or guardian sign your application form
  4. Provide school compliance verification form
  5. Pay fee ($12)
  6. Kentucky license examiner will administer a test
  7. Pass written test
  8. Pass vision test
  9. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Kentucky KSP, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Kentucky, you will need a drivers education course and at least 60 hours of supervised driving hours.

Kentucky Driving Test FAQs

There are a total of 40 questions on the Kentucky permit test.

For the KY written test, you must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 32 questions

You may apply for a permit in Kentucky when you are at least 16 years old.

You can get your license in Kentucky when you have waited at least 6 months after you received your permit.

You can get your license in Kentucky when you have had the following supervised driving time: 60 hours, 10 of which must be at night.

The minimum age for a driver’s license in Kentucky is: 16.5

In Kentucky you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: midnight – 6 a.m.

Passenger Restrictions: no more than 1 passenger younger than 20 unless supervised by a driving instructor secondary enforcement.

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place until you reach the age of: 18.

The Passenger Restrictions will be in place until you reach the age of: 18.

Kentucky law prohibits learner’s permit holders from driving between midnight and 6 a.m. or from carrying more than one passenger younger than 20 unless supervised by a driving instructor.

In Kentucky, license holders younger than 18 must complete a driver education course or a state-sponsored traffic school.
