About the Utah Permit Test

The Utah permit driving test is made up of 50 total questions. Of those 50 questions, individuals will need to answer 40 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 80%.

Individuals must be at least 15 years of age to take the Utah permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Utah permit test:

  1. Apply for your permit in person
  2. Get your photo taken
  3. Pass vision test
  4. Pay fee ($19)
  5. Provide proper documentation
  6. Pass knowledge test
  7. Have parental or guardian consent
  8. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Utah DLD, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Utah, you will need to complete 27 hours (high school classroom), 18 hours (private instruction), or 30 hours (Utah-approved online course) of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 40 hours of supervised driving hours.

Utah Driving Test FAQs

There are a total of 50 questions on the Utah permit test.

For the UT written test, you must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 40 questions.

You may apply for a permit in Utah when you are at least 15 years old.

You can get your license in Utah when you have waited at least 6 months after you received your permit.

You can get your license in Utah when you have had the following supervised driving time: 40 hours, 10 of which must be at night.

The minimum age for a driver’s license in Utah is: 16

In Utah you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: midnight – 5 a.m.

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place until you reach: 17.

In Utah, permit holders younger than 18 may only drive under the supervision of a driving instructor, a parent or guardian, or a responsible adult who has accepted liability for the permit holder’s driving by signing the permit application.

Permit applicants younger than 19 must be enrolled in driver education. In Utah, supervised driving in the learner stage may include up to five hours in a driving simulator. In Utah license applicants who are younger than 19 must have completed driver education.
