Is EMT Training Right For You?
Those who want to become an emergency medical technician need to take EMT training. The EMT is trained to help people who have medical emergencies. They are often the first to arrive at automobile accidents and other situations where trained medical personnel are needed.
There are four levels of EMT. The EMT level one has been trained in basic life saving methods such as CPR and first aid. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It involves helping people who are not breathing. The brain needs oxygen and if the flow of air is blocked this could lead to permanent damage or even death. Every EMT is trained to help people start breathing on their own.
The level two and three EMT are have more training and experience in helping people with medical emergencies. They can use equipment such as heart defibrillators which is a device that is used to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm. People who are suffering a heart attack sometimes need this device in order to get their heart to beat normally. The EMT might only have less than a minute to help a person survive a heart attack and therefore has to act fast.
The level four EMT is a paramedic. These health emergency professionals can provide more extensive medical care. They can administer pain medication, they can do tracheotomies in order to help someone restore breathing, and in essence they are trained to do whatever it takes to help a person survive the transport to the nearest hospital.
Those who are interested in this work can find training at their local community college. There are also private training centers that will train a person to be certified as a level one EMT. Once a person is certified he or she can apply for work with an ambulance company or hospital. Once a person has experience as a level one emergency medical technician, he or she can continue training and qualify for level two and three.
Not all who want to be an EMT want to become paramedics. But those who do should consider either an associates degree or even bachelors degree in EMT training. This is a rewarding career, but of course it also a demanding job.
