GMAT ScoresGMAT Scores

The verbal and quantitative portions of the GMAT Test are administered in a “computer-adaptive testing” (CAT) format.  The CAT format adapts the difficulty of the questions based on how you answer previous questions.  A middle difficulty question is given first, and then more difficult questions are given if the first question is answered correctly, or easier questions are given is the first question is missed.  The intent of the CAT approach is to adapt the questions based on the user’s aptitude.
With the CAT approach, you are not allowed to go back and change answers to previous questions, and you must answer each question to proceed.

The GMAT Test has four scores associated with it.  There is a total score, and individual verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing scores.  The GMAT total score range from 200 to 800.  The individual verbal and quantitative scores range from 0 to 60.  The GMAT Analytical Writing section is scored on a 0-6 scale with half-point increments.  The analytical writing scores are completely separate from the other scores, and do not count in the total score.

Cancelling your GMAT ScoresCancelling your GMAT Scores

Immediately after taking your GMAT exam, you will have the option of cancelling your GMAT scores.  If you elect to cancel your scores, you will not be able to view them.  You cannot partially cancel your scores – you cancel everything.  If you choose to cancel your GMAT scores, they can not be reinstated.  Additionally, your future GMAT score reports will indicate that you have previously cancelled a score.

Interpreting your GMAT ScoresInterpreting your GMAT Scores

The best way to understand your GMAT Scores is by comparing them to other students and seeing what your preferred colleges require. The table below lists your percentile compared to other students.  For example, if you scored a 33 on your GMAT Verbal score, this implies that your percentile score is 66 (i.e., you scored better than 66% of the other students who took the GMAT Test). The average (mean) GMAT Scores were 27.8 for Verbal, 35.6 for Quantitative, 535.2 for GMAT Total and 4.4 for Analytical Writing.
