The Air Force ASVAB scores are frequently a subject of confusion and anxiety for the person planning a career in the Air Force. The real meaning of ASVAB scores as they apply to each person's future in this branch of the military is rarely explained fully . There are some unfortunate misapprehensions about what the scores mean and how they affect a person's occupational prospects in the Air Force.
To make the scoring system a little simpler, it means that a fictional individual might score exceptionally high on mechanical aptitude, shop knowledge, and communication skills while the rest of their scores were merely acceptable. While a high score and aptitude for communication is very desirable, the scores that might have the most bearing on their possible jobs are the shop knowledge, and mechanical aptitude skills, especially if the job being sought was that of a motor vehicle maintenance technician.
Each job classification has a necessary score in certain areas of the ASVAB battery. While it requires a minimum score of 36 of the 99 possible points on the Air Force Qualifying Test to be eligible for enlistment and the AFQT score is derived from the overall score of the AFQT 36 points could come from any area or combination of areas. The scores from the sub test areas from the aptitude batteries are what determine the possible jobs that might be available for that person.
There are ASVAB study aids available to help the interested person ready themselves for these tests. While testing and aptitude batteries may cause some anxiety for some it is usually an excellent way to determine which occupations are best suited for a particular person. If you have your eye on a particular occupation then it is important that you reach the minimum test scores and this is where a study plan may well be invaluable. Following a consistent study schedule and working on problem areas regularly can produce marked improvements in test scores.
