It is a common misconception that the FE exam is a requirement to complete an engineering degree – it is not. However, students who have their eye set on earning the PE certificate will need to complete and pass the FE exam.

Most students will take the FE exam when they are close to finishing their undergraduate engineering degree – usually their final semester.

The exam is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Please keep in mind that the FE exam is offered for several disciplines, so it is important you register for the proper course when selecting a FE prep course.

Factors to Consider

  • Brush up on knowledge – have you forgotten some topics from undergraduate courses? A FE prep course will help you brush up on key subjects to prepare for the exam.
  • Study discipline – you may tell yourself you need to study before taking the exam, but that may not happen unless you invest in some FE exam prep.
  • Budget – some of these prep courses can get somewhat expensive. These options may not be for everyone.
  • Prep course – if you decide to purchase a FE exam prep course, ensure you enroll in the proper course. There are various FE exams that cover multiple disciplines.

Bottom Line - If you want to make sure you pass your FE exam the first time around, a FE exam prep course can help you achieve your goal.

School of PE Summary

Our choice for most comprehensive FE prep course is School of PE. The courses they offer are very in-depth and contain everything you will need to pass your Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

School of PE offers 2 different ways for students to learn:

  • On-Demand
  • Live Online

Since the FE exam has different versions depending on the type of engineering you are pursuing, School of PE offers some different courses:

  • FE Chemical
  • FE Civil
  • FE Electrical
  • FE Environmental
  • FE Industrial
  • FE Mechanical
  • FE Other (General)

We decided to jump into the on-demand course to give you a better idea of how the course is structured and some of the features within the course. You can read our review below.

One of the coolest features of this course is the custom study schedules. This will be the first thing you are asked to do when you enter the course. You will be asked various questions like your confidence with certain topics, how many hours you can study per day, and what days you are not able to study.

After the software receives all of your answers, a custom study schedule is created for you. The schedule will tell you exactly what lessons and topics you need to complete that day. The schedule is great for keeping you on track.

The “course content” tab is where you will find all of your course materials. The course is split up into various chapters with subtopics. This categorization method makes the course easy to follow along and less overwhelming.

Each chapter contains guided notes, lecture videos, quizzes, and flashcards. There are 80+ hours of lecture videos included in the course. The videos can sometimes get long, but the instructor is drawing and annotating over their notes which adds an interactive element to the videos.

You can make your own notes during the lecture videos within the course. There is room to the right of the videos to do so. Your notes will be time stamped so you can see exactly where you made notes within the video.

Practice questions are included in most of the chapters and lecture videos. If you are looking to work on practice questions specifically, you can build your own practice exams and focus on specific topics or concepts. There are different filters you can apply like topics, difficulty, and questions you have not answered already.

The course also includes full-length practice exams. These exams are timed and are meant to simulate the actual exam. After you finish one of these exams, you will see a detailed results report. This report is very detailed and shows you a ton of different insights.

All of the questions included in this course include answer explanations so you can better learn why something was correct or incorrect.

Best Features of School of PE -Ability to build custom practice sessions and custom study schedules.

PPI Summary

Just like School of PE, PPI offers 2 main options for students looking to study for the FE exam:

  • On-Demand
  • Live Online

PPI also offers FE exam prep for most of the different subjects. We have listed them below:

  • FE Civil
  • FE Chemical
  • FE Industrial
  • FE Mechanical
  • FE Electrical and Computer
  • FE Environmental
  • FE Other Disciplines

Our team reviewed the on-demand course, read below to see our thoughts on the course and some of the features of the course.

PPI offers a 1-year, 6-month, or 3-month program when registering for a FE prep course. Most courses start around $975 and as you increase the amount of time you register for, the price increases.

PPI also advertises the price as starting at $195, but this is for students who want to study on a weekly basis, and it is $195 per week.

Video lectures are the main method for learning in these prep courses. There are more than 70 hours of lectures included in the course (this does vary depending on which course you register for).

PPI offers study schedules for students who enroll in their course. Just like School of PE, the study schedule is helpful and great for remaining on track.

Students can complete diagnostic exams to get a better idea of what they know, and what they do not know. These can help save you some time and are a cool feature.

In addition to the diagnostic exams, there are also full-length practice exams. These are meant to simulate the actual exam and should be used to see how you are progressing through the course.

If you are just looking to work on practice problems, you can utilize the quiz generator. This allows you to create your own quizzes and work on specific problems.

The course also includes an online practice problems book and a review manual book. Both of these books can be accessed online and are great supplementary materials.

Best Features of PPI - Diagnostic exams and quiz generator.

  • Only 1 full-length exam

EET Summary

Engineering Education and Training (EET) only offers FE exam prep for the following 2 courses:

  • FE Civil
  • FE Environmental

EET only offers on-demand prep courses for their FE exam prep. These courses start at $549 – the lowest price of any of the courses we looked at.

Students will have access to lecture videos, practice problems, and 1 full-length simulated exam. We would have liked to see more than 1 full-length exam, but at least they have 1.

Also included in the course are printed study materials. This is a nice feature that not a lot of the other providers offer. Sometimes it is nice to get away from the computer for a bit.

Another unique feature of this course are the instructor led workshops. These workshops take place on pre-determined dates. The workshops focus on applying lecture concepts to FE exam style problems. The lectures are led by industry experts and are included with all prep courses offered by EET.

The course includes 24/7 email support. If you have a specific question about a question within the course, you can email an instructor and get an answer back.

Best Features of EET - Instructor led workshops and price.

  • Cons

Capstone Summary

Just like EET, Capstone only offers on-demand FE prep courses. They offer prep courses for the following FE exams:

  • FE Civil
  • FE Mechanical
  • FE Other
  • FE Chemical
  • FE Electrical

Users who sign up for this course will have unlimited access with most of the courses starting at $699.

The dashboard is the home for students and where students can keep track of their progress. You will see things like tasks not started, tasks in progress, and tasks completed. This tool helps you stay on track and complete your studies.

The course only includes 30+ hours of video instruction, which is a little low when compared to other courses we looked at. The video lectures are a little boring as the instructor just talks over the slides.

With that being said, the information is still informative and helpful. Students can definitely still benefit from the lecture videos. The videos also include a transcript so students can read along and stay more engaged that way.

After going through the course and looking around, we felt as though the course was a little outdated. The course layout, lecture videos, and other features just felt like they have not been updated in a while.

However, we understand not everyone can spend the money on a top-tier FE prep course, so this is still a viable option.

Best Feature of Capstone – Unlimited subscription and price.

How do I prepare for the FE?

There are two different ways you can prepare for the FE exam. Option 1 consists of self-studying and relying on your undergraduate knowledge to pass the exam.

Option 2 consists of enrolling in a FE prep course. Even if you think you know everything, a prep course can help you brush up on topics you may be rusty on.

Both options can work. A lot of how you prepare depends on what kind of person you are. If you are self-motivated, you may be fine to self-study. If you need some help or motivation, a prep course may be your best bet.

How long should you study for the FE?

This depends on how much time you can dedicate to your studies. In general, it is recommended that you set aside 2-3 months to study for this exam.

However, if you have a lot going on in your life, you may want to set aside some additional time to study. Vice versa, if you have a lot of free time and can study more often, you may only need 1-1.5 months to study.

What are the best FE exam prep courses?

Our team looked at numerous FE prep courses and found that the following courses were the best:

  1. School of PE
  2. PPI
  3. EET
  4. Capstone

All of these courses can get the job done. Some courses have more features and better offerings than other.
