Our team has gone into both of these courses and played around with all of the different features offered. You can find screenshots and our take on those features below.

User Interface

The Blueprint interface is sensible, informative, and easy to use. On the dashboard, you can get a quick view of your course progress, your completed modules, exams taken, and live sessions attended. The dashboard serves as a complete home base for the user.

Blueprint’s study plan interface is especially pleasing, as it is clear, color-coded, and fully customizable. Users can move lessons around on the calendar, and get an idea of how they’ll progress through the material. Having a study plan that’s easy to use and edit makes preparing for the MCAT exam a lot simpler.

The Magoosh user interface is similar to Blueprint’s, with an organized dashboard upon entering. Magoosh shows users their progress through the course, a question of the day, and the current lesson. Their UI is pleasing to the eye, organized, and not overwhelming.

Videos

The way you learn with Blueprint vs. Magoosh differs slightly. Blueprint contains more videos than Magoosh, all of which are generally 4-10 minutes. The videos include an instructor explaining the concepts and clear, organized graphics.

Blueprint also sends users physical textbooks, so if you’re somebody that learn better from a physical book than online, Blueprint is a great option.

Blueprint is also unique in that they offer a live course option in which users can participate in a real-time online course. This is a great way to get engaged with the material and give you the feeling of being in a real classroom.

Magoosh also utilizes video lessons. When users select a lesson, they’re brought to the video lecture, with a virtual notepad on the right. The videos are user-friendly, with an option for closed captions, speed, fast-forward, and rewind, so everyone can keep up.

Practice Exams and Questions

When it comes to practicing what you’ve learned, Blueprint has the most options. There is a total of 15 full-length practice exams, so by the time you take the real thing, you’ll already know what to expect. Aside from full exams, there are quizzes along the way, sprinkled throughout each module to help you grasp the material.

Blueprint also offers alternatives to tests and quizzes with customizable flashcards. The flashcards session gives users scores of “high comfort,” “medium comfort,” or “low comfort,” so you can understand your strengths and weaknesses of each topic you study. This is a great way to gain insight into what you may want to focus on in the Blueprint Qbank.

Blueprint gives users access to over 10,000 practice questions. If you utilize Blueprint every day for the full 12 months, that’s just over 27 unique questions every day. A great feature in Blueprint is the option to utilize those thousands of questions to build customized practice sessions.

To do this, all you have to do is go to the “Qbank” tab, apply filters to find the topics you want, and target your focus.

Blueprint MCAT Course Review Questions

Magoosh MCAT also offers timed, full-length practice exams. While there are fewer full exams than in Blueprint (only three), they are a great simulation of the real thing, with the same formatting and even exam breaks throughout.

The Magoosh practice sessions are an important resource, and, like Blueprint, fully customizable. Magoosh offers over 740 total practice questions, all of which can be refined and focused to your needs.

To do this, users can begin a practice session, set a time limit, and opt to answer questions they previously answered incorrectly, never answered before, or a combination.

Score Reports

The Blueprint analytics tools are some of the most complex we’ve seen. Everything can be found under the “Analytics” tab. Here, users have access to a ton of information that can be broken down into specific categories, including:

  • Subject/Topic
  • Difficulty
  • Skill
  • Time spent
  • Passage

With Blueprint, users can easily spot patterns in their behavior and identify problem areas. Their data visualization is unmatched, with graphs, charts, and infographics that are super easy to understand.

Blueprint MCAT Course Review Diagnostics

An example of the Blueprint score report

Magoosh analytics are not nearly as comprehensive as Blueprint. On the dashboard and within each lesson, users are given clear charts showing their course progress and the number of questions they’ve answered.

There does not appear to be any advanced analytics to see your strengths and weaknesses at a glance, but each practice test does include a full explanation of each question, plus a pace comparison between yourself and other users. While this is helpful information, it is only available on practice tests.

Which prep course is better — Blueprint vs. Magoosh MCAT — largely depends on what you value in a prep course. Blueprint contains far more study resources than Magoosh, and has built-in, advanced user analytics to save you time when studying.

The live learning package is also unique to Blueprint and gives users the feeling of being part of a community, rather than going through the course alone.

However, Blueprint is also extremely expensive, and users can save hundreds of dollars by using Magoosh. While Magoosh does not have as many resources, they still offer a score increase guarantee by at least ten points, or you can get your money back. This means that Magoosh is confident in their materials, and you can be too.

Bottom Line: Blueprint is the better overall course, but Magoosh is the best value option.

If you want to consider other study resources, consider the following:

  1. Best online MCAT course
  2. Best MCAT prep books
  3. Best MCAT tutors
