About the District of Columbia Permit Test

The District of Columbia permit driving test is made up of 30 total questions. Of those 30 questions, individuals will need to answer 24 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 80%.

Individuals must be at least 16 years of age to take the District of Columbia permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the District of Columbia permit test:

  1. Fill out driver application
  2. Go to DMV center and apply
  3. Bring proper documentation
  4. Pass vision test
  5. Pass knowledge test
  6. Pay the fees ($30 total)
  7. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the District of Columbia DMV, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of District of Columbia, you will need to complete 30 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 40 hours of supervised driving hours.

District of Columbia Driving Test FAQs

There are a total of 30 questions on the District of Columbia permit test.

For the DC written test, you must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, which comes out to a total of 24 questions.

You may apply for a permit in District of Columbia when you are at least 16 years old.

You can get your license in District of Columbia when you have waited at least 6 months after you received your permit.

You can get your license in District of Columbia when you have had the following supervised driving time: 40 hours in learner’s stage; 10 hours at night in intermediate stage.

The minimum age for a driver’s license in District of Columbia is: 16.5.

In District of Columbia you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: September–June: 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Sun. – Thur., 12:01 a.m.-6 a.m. Sat. – Sun.; July – August: 12:01 a.m. – 6 a.m.

Passenger Restrictions: first 6 months—no passengers; thereafter, no more than 2 passengers.

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place: entire intermediate stage (min. age: 18).

The Passenger Restrictions will be in place for: no passengers for 6 months; no more than 2 for the remaining intermediate stage (min. age: 18) 

In the District of Columbia, the learner’s stage is mandatory for all license applicants, regardless of age. A nighttime restriction (9 p.m.-6 a.m.) applies in the learner stage.

In the District of Columbia, license applicants younger than 21 must go through the intermediate stage until they have completed it or until they turn 21. Provisional license holders who are younger than 21 are required to adhere to the night and passenger restriction for the duration of the stage, six-month minimum.

Drivers younger than 18 who hold a full license with conditions must also adhere to the night and passenger restrictions.
