About the Massachusetts Permit Test

The Massachusetts permit driving test is made up of 25 total questions. Of those 25 questions, individuals will need to answer 18 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 72%.

Individuals must be at least 16 years of age to take the Massachusetts permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the Massachusetts permit test:

  1. Decide which ID you want
  2. Get proper documents prepared
  3. Fill out application online
  4. Apply for your permit in person
  5. Get consent from your parent or guardian
  6. Pay fee ($30)
  7. Pass vision test
  8. Get your picture taken
  9. Pass permit exam
  10. Get your permit

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the Massachusetts RMV, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of Massachusetts, you will need to complete 30 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 30 hours of supervised driving hours.

There are a total of 25 questions on the Massachusetts permit test.

Nighttime Restrictions: 12:30 a.m. – 5 a.m. (between 12:30 a.m.-1 a.m. and 4 a.m. – 5 a.m. the night driving and passenger restrictions are subject to secondary enforcement; enforcement is primary at all other times).

Passenger Restrictions: no passengers younger than 18 (between 12:30 am – 1 am and 4 am – 5 am the night driving and passenger restrictions are secondarily enforced; enforcement is primary at all other times).

In Massachusetts, the night driving restriction for permit holders younger than 18 is midnight to 5 a.m., unless they are accompanied by a licensed parent or guardian.

In Massachusetts, the requirement for supervised driving is 30 hours for applicants who have successfully completed a driver skills development program in a closed, off-road course licensed by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

In Massachusetts, driver education is required of license applicants younger than 18.
