About the New Jersey Permit Test

The New Jersey permit driving test is made up of 50 total questions. Of those 50 questions, individuals will need to answer 40 of those questions correctly to pass the exam. This comes out to a minimum passing score of 80%.

Individuals must be at least 16 years of age to take the New Jersey permit test. You can expect to follow these steps before and after taking the New Jersey permit test:

  1. Enroll in drivers education
  2. Collect proper documentation
  3. Get parental or guardian consent
  4. Visit agency
  5. Pass vision test
  6. Pass knowledge test
  7. Complete behind-the-wheel instruction
  8. Get permit validated at motor vehicle agency

Documentation Required

When applying for your permit at the New Jersey MVC, you will need to provide proof of your name, age, and address. Typical documents you can use include:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Social Security Card
  • 1099 Form, W2 Statement or Paystub
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

In addition, you will typically need to have a parent or guardian present if you are under the age of 18.

After you receive your learners permit, you will need to complete some general requirements to get your full driver’s license. In the state of New Jersey, you will need to complete 30 hours of drivers ed classroom hours and at least 6 months of supervised driving hours.

There are a total of 50 questions on the New Jersey permit test.

The minimum age for a driver’s license in New Jersey is: 17

In New Jersey you will have the following restrictions on your driver’s license –

Nighttime Restrictions: 11 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Passenger Restrictions: no more than 1 passenger (exception is limited to drivers’ dependents).

The Nighttime restrictions will be in place until you reach the age of: 12 months of license or 21.

The Passenger Restrictions will be in place until you reach the age of: 12 months of license or 21.

In New Jersey, the permit becomes an intermediate license after six months for drivers younger than 21 and after 3 months for drivers 21 and older.

The graduated licensing law applies to adults, except that the night driving and passenger restrictions are waived for new drivers 21 and older. If the applicant has not completed driver education, the minimum permit age is 17 and the minimum intermediate license age is 17.5.

Learner’s permit holders may not drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and may carry only one passenger in addition to the supervising driver or any parent, guardian or dependent.
