HESI Test Information

The HESI entrance exam is formally referred to as the Evolve Reach Admission Assessment Exam.  The HESI exam consists of a total of 10 different exams, covering the areas of:

  • Math
  • Reading
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Physics

Schools can choose to adminster any of the exams to assess a potential students fitness for their program.  Most schools choose to focus on the Math, Reading, Vocabulary and Grammar tests as a way to evaluate a student's readiness.  The best way to prepare for the exam is by using HESI practice tests.  Studying for the HESI Admissions Assessment (A2) exam is similar to taking TEAS practice tests which are also used for admissions to Nursing programs.

Details of the sections are as follows:

Math: 50-item exam.  Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, and general math facts that are useful, for example, when calculating drug dosages and solutions.

Reading Comprehension: 47-item exam. Reading scenarios that are health related.  Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, including:  identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.  The reading scenarios pop up on the screen.  Students can move around the windows to see the entire scenario.

Vocabulary and General Knowledge: 50-item exam. Contains basic vocabulary that is often used in health care fields.  Recommended Time: 50 minutes.

Grammar:  50-item exam.  Contains basic grammar, including:  parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, and commonly occurring grammatical errors.

Chemistry: 25-item exam. Depending on whether or not Chemistry is a pre-requisite for your curriculum, you may or may not have students complete this quick assessment of chemistry knowledge. Contains test items that cover matter, chemical equations and reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, and chemical bonding.

 Anatomy and Physiology (A&P): 25-item exam. Depending on whether or not A&P is a pre-requisite for your curriculum, you may or may not have students complete this quick assessment of A&P knowledge. Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems.

Biology: 25-item exam. Depending on whether or not Biology is a pre-requisite for your curriculum, you may or may not have students complete this quick assessment of Biology knowledge. Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis.

Physics: 25-item exam. Depending on whether or not Physics is a pre-requisite for your curriculum, you may or may not have students complete this quick assessment of Physics knowledge. Contains test items covering: average speed, acceleration, projectile motion, Newton’s Laws of Motion, friction, rotation, uniform circular motion, energy, gravitation, waves and sound, optics, and light. Recommended Time: 50 minutes.

Many nursing students come from other health-related fields like CNAs, EMTs, and Medical Assistants.  CNAs prepare for their exams with CNA practice testsEMT practice tests are used to pass the NREMT certification exams.  Medical Assistants prepare with one of the following: NCCT practice tests, CMA practice tests or RMA practice tests.
