What is an IQ Test for Kids?

While IQ tests measure a range of cognitive abilities, a kids IQ test can give an idea of their intellectual potential for growth.

IQ tests for kids can also give an idea of what their learning style is and how parents can best support them in their learning process, especially if their scores are lower than the average for their age.

Kids IQ Test Questions

There are two types of intelligence usually tested on IQ tests for both kids and adults. One is knowledge-based or crystallized intelligence. The other is more memory-based or fluid intelligence.

A crystallized intelligence question may be whether or not someone knows who an important historical figure is or why it’s important to wash your hands before eating.

Fluid intelligence is tested by asking takers to resolve an issue or solve a problem like finding which number is missing or which object comes next in a series. Surprisingly, some questions found on the Wonderlic cognitive ability test are similar to questions found on an IQ test for kids.

Who Needs an IQ Test for Kids?

Most of the time, a kids IQ test is not administered unless it is some form of a special case to learn more about the mind of the child.

These special cases can be to learn whether your child may need remedial classes to help them get back on track with their age level or if your child is highly gifted and needs a special education course to supplement their cognitive level.

If you aren’t sure if your child is ahead or behind, a free IQ test for kids may be a good way to check and see where your kid is and whether or not you should get a professional one.

Difference Between a Kids IQ Test and IQ Tests

Since children do not already have a basis of problem-solving to build upon and draw from, an IQ test for kids is usually structured around a more fundamental level of problem-solving or fluid intelligence.

Many tests overall have moved to more image-based questions, but especially the ones for young children as they can understand images better than written passages or verbal descriptions.

As for crystallized intelligence, adults will have more knowledge that is readily available about things that have happened in the world than children. Therefore, their test can be more evenly dispersed between the two rather than relying more on problem-solving like children’s tests normally do.

Children’s IQ tests are more inclined to include questions that challenge their creativity since they are known to typically be more creative than adults are.

Benefits of a Kids IQ Test

All parents want to know where their child stacks up in the world and what potential they have to become successful adults. But kids IQ tests can tell parents, educators, and kids so much more than how they are developing cognitively.

Most IQ tests for kids are scored in the different categories they are tested on instead of the old IQ tests that just gave one score for their overall performance. Because of this, you and your child can learn what areas they are strong in and where they could use a little help.

IQ tests can also give you an idea of how to better teach a child based on the areas where they are proficient and where they need help. This is one reason schools may provide kids with IQ assessments.

Another reason is so they can also get an idea of what career field would be a good match for them or learn what they need to improve in based on which job they would like to have someday.

When given at a young age, teachers and parents can learn how to keep their children from falling too far behind. If it is discovered that a child needs a more supplemented education plan, catching it early and learning how to best teach them can help a kid get back on track before they are too far behind.

For kids who test well, it can help give teachers and parents time to coordinate an education plan for the child.

If teachers think your child may be better supported in another school, it gives you time to figure out if you want to send your child to another school and how to do so. Teachers can also work together to set your kid on the gifted track that is available at your school.

How Can I Test My Child’s IQ Level?

There are free kids IQ tests available for you to test their IQ from the comfort of your home, but for the most accurate results, you will need to have a test administered by an expert. If you are interested in professionally testing your child’s IQ, here are some ways to do so.

  • Contacting a Psychologist: They are trained in learning more about the personality of a child, so they can give you a broader vision of how successful your child may be when they grow up.
  • Educationalist: Educationalists are special consultants placed in schools to supplement child development and be sure the students are reaching their full potential.

These two types of individuals may be able to give you a good idea of what the results will be translated to in-class time.
