Kaplan LSAT Features
Most of the core features offered by Kaplan are the same. Our team dissects each of these features so you can make an informed decision before making a purchase.
Coursework
Kaplan is loaded with prep materials. There is a focused study plan that guides you to lessons, book material, and other assignments that will make up your study regimen. Those lessons are all followed with extensive study materials and detailed explanations.
Coursework is broken down even further when you consider the LSAT Channel. We have a comprehensive look at the LSAT Channel below.
The core materials provide over 30 hours of lessons. The LSAT Channel has over 180 hours of content. Combined, the two have over 210 hours of study content. That’s not even counting the practice materials.
Kaplan utilizes a study plan that breaks studies down into six core sections and then guides you through each of them. Each section is broken down even further until you reach individual lessons.
This guided approach keeps you from getting overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content in Kaplan’s library.
Video Lessons
Videos of varying length are found in each study unit. These videos are the foundation of the entire Kaplan LSAT prep course and they are very valuable.
The instructor appears in the bottom corner of the screen and gives the lesson while a whiteboard follows them in the background to provide visual references of key points. This benefits both text and visual learners.
Instructors on each video solve problems and walk students through the entire process.
With that said, there are only a couple of downsides to these videos. One is that the instructors have dry personalities. Some prep courses have more charismatic instructors on camera.
Another downside is that some of the lessons overwhelm you with visual clutter. Having too much text on the screen distracts from the verbal instructions.
Practice Questions (Custom Practice Sessions)
Once you’ve gone through the core content of each study unit, you’ll be taken to a practice section. Kaplan really pushes practice.
Kaplan has thousands of practice questions and hours of content to sink your teeth into. But the material itself isn’t what makes Kaplan shine.
Students can create custom practice sessions, allowing you to target your study sessions to areas you need to improve. You can select questions from a specific category to focus on areas where you need more work.
Answer Explanations
Each practice question is accompanied by detailed explanations. These explanations are written along with each practice problem as you go through the material, but you can also download a PDF that gives all of the explanations. That way, you have it all in an easy-to-find location.
We found that having the ability to review practice materials offline is a huge benefit.
Overall, we love the practice questions and feel that they add tremendous value to this prep course.
Practice Exams
Let’s wrap up the practice features by looking at the full-length exams offered by Kaplan. If you pay for the Prep Plus tier, you’ll get access to all of the past official LSATs. This gives you a way to practice on real LSAT tests that were administered in the past.
Kaplan’s study plan requires you to take three full-length tests that it uses to evaluate your progress. Each of these tests is followed by a Smart Report. We reviewed this report further below.
Kaplan uses guided studies to make sure you’re studying the right materials. Its AI technology uses these practice tests as a primary tool for gauging your progress. Where these practice tests really excel is in creating real exam-like conditions for testing. This ensures that the results are accurate.
LSAT Channel
We briefly mentioned Kaplan’s LSAT Channel so now let’s dive deeper into this incredible feature. While this channel isn’t technically considered part of the core lesson plan, it is an essential element to mastering the LSAT.
These videos are live and their production looks the same as those in core lessons but they add a level of interactivity. You can ask questions in the chat and answer the live polls.
The on-demand videos are extremely helpful and do a really good job of complimenting the rest of the content. Of course, there are also pre-recorded videos on the channel but they don’t include interactive elements.
User Interface & Dashboard
Kaplan’s dashboard is exactly what you’d expect from a top-tier prep course. It puts everything right at your fingertips. It’s pretty easy to navigate and highly intuitive. We played around with it for a few minutes before figuring out how to expertly navigate through this course.
The entire user interface provides clear navigational menus and intuitive dropdown menus that make it easy to find the right section. It’s snappy and highly responsive, even on mobile.
The only downside of Kaplan’s approach is that each piece of study material opens a new window. This will cause your browser to quickly get overwhelmed if you’re not paying attention.
Score Reports
Kaplan provides a Smart Report after each practice test. This gives you targeted information about how you scored on each section of the LSAC practice test. It also provides some useful feedback. This feedback shows you where you need to improve.
Smart Reports are very accurate at showing you where to focus your studies. This is arguably the most impressive feature in the Kaplan LSAT course. These reports are used to guide your studies and show you where to put in supplemental work that will improve your score.
Score Predictor
A score prediction is posted on your dashboard. This prediction is Kaplan’s assessment of what you would score on the LSAT if you took it right then. As you complete practice materials on Kaplan, the system factors all of your reports and completed study sessions into the score predictor. So it’s updated regularly.
With that said, this prediction should only be used as a guideline for your studies. Don’t count on it being completely accurate.
