The SAT writing and language section includes 44 total questions. You will have 35 minutes to complete this section.

There are a total of 4 passages on this section of the exam. Each passage is between 400 and 450 words and includes 11 multiple-choice questions each.

SAT Writing and Language Overview

The questions you will find on this section fall into 2 categories:

  1. Expression of Ideas
  2. Standard English Conventions

Expression of idea questions will test you on topics like:

  • Development – questions about the main idea, details in the passage, and information presented in tables, graphs, and charts
  • Organization – questions about the logical placement of information and ideas, introductions, conclusions, and transitions used in the passages.
  • Effective Language Usage – questions about style, tone, and sentence flow.

Standard English conventions questions will test you on topics like:

  • Correcting Grammar
  • Mechanics in a Passage
  • Correcting Errors in Sentence Structure
  • Improper Grammar Usage

As stated above, there will be 4 total passages. Some passages will be harder than others. The passages could be about one of the following topics:

  • Careers
  • Science
  • Humanities
  • History and Social Studies

1 passage will be a narrative while the other 3 passages will be either argumentative, informative, or explanatory.
