GRE Test Information

Many graduate schools in the United States require applicants to take a standardized admissions test such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GRE was created in 1949 by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) which still administers the test. The purpose of the GRE Exam is to assess verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking. These skills are not related to any particular field of study and are developed over lengthy periods of time. The GRE test is given in a computer-based mode at various Prometric testing centers throughout the world.

Different schools and departments place varying degrees of emphasis on the GRE. While some schools view it as a mere admission formality, some schools consider it an important selection factor.

In August of 2011, the GRE was significantly revised. The grading scale was changed from a 200-800 range to a 130-170 range. The test sections remained the same but some of the question types were revised as well as the manner in which the computer-adaptive question were presented.
