Earning a high school diploma - or one of the other available Certificate of High School Equivalency credentials - is considered the minimum level of education one needs to find employment - jobs that would be unavailable without the High School Equivalency (HSE) Credential. Additionally, a high school level diploma/equivalency credential is a must-have if one is to gain admission to a professional school or any institution of higher education.
A high school equivalency credential is a valuable tool for those who, for whatever reason, did not earn a high school diploma more traditionally. The High School Equivalency Test, known by the acronym HiSET, is intended to measure whether a student has the academic skills that are equivalent to a typical high school graduate. The HiSET exam is an alternative to the GED test. Passing the HiSET exam will allow students to receive a high school equivalency credential that is issued by their state.
Students will typically take the HiSET exam in order to attend a college or attain a specific job that requires a high school diploma or equivalent. The HiSET exam has been designed to align with the Common Core State Standards in Language Arts and Math.
The TABE Test is a standardized placement test developed by McGraw Hill/CTB. TABE stands for “Test of Adult Basic Education”. The TABE test is used primarily by technical schools, trade schools and some colleges to help them assess a student’s academic readiness.
The standard TABE test covers reading, math and language. Schools will use your scores on the TABE test to determine whether you are ready for their programs. In addition, schools will use your scores to determine what level of course to place you into. Your scores on the TABE test may also prompt the school to place you into remedial courses before you are allowed to take their standard courses.
The TABE test can also be used for other purposes. For example, some GED and Adult Education programs may require their students to take the TABE in order to assess their academic skills.
