CompTIA Security+ Exam Outline

The CompTIA Secuirty+ exam is updated every 3 years. The SY0-501 was the old exam that was created in 2017. This exam will be retired and replaced by the CompTIA Security+ SY0-601 exam in November 2020. 

The SY0-601 exam still holds the same core principals of the previous exam but is updated for new trends and technologies that were not adopted throughout the industry in 2017. You can see the topics that will be covered on the new Security+ exam below:

To pass the CompTIA Security+ exam, you must score at least 750 out of 900. To establish your core knowledge of cybersecurity, the CompTIA Security+ exam ensures that those who pass are able to: 

  • Install wireless security settings
  • Detect the various types of compromise 
  • Understand penetration testing 
  • Understand vulnerability scanning 
  • Implement public key infrastructure 
  • Install network components
  • Troubleshoot issues to support organizational security
  • Summarize risk management

The exam will have no more than 90 questions total that consist of multiple choice questions, drag and drop activities, and performance-based questions. You’ll have 90 minutes total to complete the exam, which is not broken up into any parts. 

You will not be able to see a clock while you are taking the test, so it’s best to keep in mind that you have roughly one minute per question.

Exam Registration, Fees, and Administration 

Before taking the exam, it’s crucial to know how to register, how much taking the exam will cost, and where you plan to take the test. 

How do you register to take the CompTIA Security+ exam in-person?

To register for the CompTIA Security+ exam at an in-person testing center, you must visit the Pearson VUE website, create an account and register to take the exam at your local testing center. Be sure to do this at least 24 hours before test day.

How do you register to take the CompTIA Security+ exam online?

If you prefer to take the CompTIA Security+ exam online, you can take the test at any day and time as long as you register at least 24 hours in advance. Then, you’ll be able to choose the date and time of the test that works best for you. While taking the test online, you’ll be monitored by a virtual proctor throughout the entire 90-minute test.

How much does it cost to take the CompTIA Security+ exam? 

Although taking the exam typically costs $370, there are many discounts that apply to students and people that already work in the IT industry full-time. The costs vary by country, you can find the complete pricing breakdown here.

CompTIA Security+ Exam Requirements 

Although there is no minimum age requirement to take the CompTIA Security+ exam, the test makers recommend that you shouldn’t take the exam until you have at least 2 years of work experience in the IT world and, more specifically, in a security-focused job.

Within five business days of taking your CompTIA Security+ exam, you’ll get your score back from whoever administered the test to you. 

What is a passing score?

It’s possible to score up to 900 points on the CompTIA Security+ exam. Even though the lowest possible score is 100, to pass, you must get at least a 750. Any score below a 750 is considered a failing grade. This means that a passing score is about 83%. 

If you find out that you passed the exam, you’ll quickly receive your CompTIA Security+ exam certification through the same account that you used to take the test.
